About the works

Machine surfacing improvements are scheduled to take place on the A1016/A1060, Parkway in Chelmsford which provides a valuable route through the city.

These works will enhance the road condition, improving journeys for residents.

Temporary restrictions will be in place, including temporary overnight road closures to enable works to take place safely. Activities will be carried out in phases, with adjustments made to the roadworks to minimise inconvenience to the public.

Where possible we will carry out additional road maintenance works, reducing the need for  traffic restrictions to be necessary later.

How it will affect you

The works began at the end of September 2025, with the support of temporary road closures between the hours of 9pm and 5am.

The work will be phased, starting on Parkway where it meets Rainsford Road, and continue along Parkway in a south easterly direction towards Viaduct Road.

Works on the southbound carriageway are expected to complete on 1 November 2025. However, due to local emergency gas works, we need to reschedule our northbound improvements to avoid overlapping with other works in the city centre.

We currently expect these works to resume in March 2025, but the exact dates will be confirmed closer to the time.

The improvements are subject to weather conditions permitting and no unexpected issue arising. No weekend working is currently planned.

Overnight road closures are necessary to safely separate the public from the workforce, and to allow access for heavy plant and machinery. Throughout these works, diversion routes will be adjusted to accommodate the change in work phases.

Access to properties within a closed section of road will be managed by the site team.

Residents are advised that delays may occur as they will need to ensure the area is safe. This will depend on activities being carried out and whether materials have set.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

We urge all drivers to take additional care, observing road closures and diversions in place as no through traffic will be permitted when closures are in place.

Impact on bus services

Bus operators will be informed of the work programme so they can consider adjustments to their services if appropriate.
