Chelmsford City Growth Package

Essex County Council secured £15 million to invest in sustainable transport methods designed to help alleviate pressure on Chelmsford’s road network. Following the consultation held in 2017, decisions were subsequently made on schemes to take forward.

Listed below are schemes that have now been completed, while progress on the other work packages are ongoing and can be viewed at Chelmsford Highway Schemes.

Broomfield Road

As part of the Chelmsford City Growth Package, Essex Highways has delivered and completed a new scheme on Broomfield Road.

Broomfield Hospital Cycle Scheme

As part of Essex County Council’s commitment to improve the provision for cyclists from Great Waltham to Chelmsford City Centre, preparations are in place to carry out works on the first phase of the proposed route from Goulton Road to Broomfield Hospital.

Chelmer Valley Road

Chelmer Valley Road is a key route connecting the north of Chelmsford into the city and connects to the Chelmer Valley Park and Ride. The scheme extended from Alan Cherry Drive through to the Lawn Lane Roundabout.

Chelmer Village Way cycleway

Essex Regiment Way crossing

The scheme consisted of a pegasus crossing connecting the cycle and bridleway networks either side of Essex Regiment Way. This type of crossing allows pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders to stop the traffic and to cross over the road.

Parkway and Victoria Road South

New Street cycle route

Works are now completed for this scheme which included the raised hybrid cycle track for Southbound cyclists and a combination of raised hybrid, segregated footway / cycleway and advisory at points for northbound cyclists.

Writtle to City Centre cycling improvements

One of the most popular cycle routes in Chelmsford benefited from investment designed to improve sustainable transport in Chelmsford. The existing National Cycle Networks 1 (NCN1) runs through Writtle towards Admirals Park and previously provided an off-carriageway connection on the west side of the city centre. Improvements have been made to increase the standard of the cycle route to encourage greater use of the network.
