About the scheme

Courtaulds Culvert located under Bovingdon Road, Bocking near Braintree was placed under an emergency closure on 9 September 2016 after inspectors found the structure to be suffering from serious deterioration.  The road was closed to vehicles to safeguard the public.

Preparation works started summer 2017 ready for the demolition and reconstruction of the culvert section that falls within the highway boundary.

The reconstructed works will consist of reinforced concrete, spanning the same footprint as the existing.  New culvert parapets with approach safety fencing will also be installed on the finished structure.

There are a number of utility supplies (gas, water, electricity) that run through the structure.   Highway engineers are in liaison with the necessary third party contacts to organise the diversion of supplies that will be required during the works.

The works

Preparatory works began in August 2017 to create a site compound and temporary parking facility, followed by the diversion of services by third party utility companies.

Excavation and demolition works were undertaken in October and engineers are currently focused on reconstruction works ready for the new culvert section.

Some unforeseen delays and additional works have been necessary which have affected the work programme.  We are working towards re-opening Bovingdon Road early 2018, however this may be subject to change if works are hampered by poor weather or unexpected issues.

We appreciate highway works can be disruptive and would like to thank you for your continued patience while we undertake these works.
