A1060/A1114 Army and Navy Flyover, Chelmsford

Advance Notice - 14 February 2019: Installation of monitoring equipment - March 2019

New temperature and movement sensors are due to be installed on the Army & Navy Flyover in March.

In September/October 2018, bridge engineers found that after the very hot summer the deck of the flyover had expanded and caused two supporting steel columns to move. The columns have been repaired with new bolts in concrete, but there remains the possibility in fluctuating weather conditions that the deck may again expand and put stress on the flyover’s supports.

This enhanced monitoring of the flyover that will provide a better understanding of how the structure behaves with seasonal temperature changes and provide engineers data which will help inform maintenance decision making.

Temperature gauges and movement sensor targets with an Automated Total Station will be installed to enable remote monitoring. Work to install the Station in its own protected enclosure on the roundabout and to attach the sensors will take place over days and nights commencing on Sunday 3 March until Saturday 9 March 2019.

Works on the Sunday 3 March and Friday 8 March are scheduled to be carried out overnight for site set up and demobilisation with operating hours from 9pm-5am.  This will require lanes to be closed to restrict traffic to one lane approaching and around the roundabout for the night time works.  The flyover will not be affected as it is usually closed overnight.

Other works will be carried out during the day time and will not affect the road.

Pedestrian access including the subway, will be maintained throughout.

Any changes to the scheduled dates for these works will be reflected on this webpage and on advance signage.

About the scheme

The Army and Navy Flyover in Chelmsford carries one way traffic (cars only) from the A1060/A1114 over the Army and Navy roundabout.  The direction of travel changes at different times of the day in a bid to support traffic flows, however the flyover is routinely closed overnight in both directions, seven days a week.

Following concerns raised in an inspection, the flyover was closed for investigation and maintenance works from 11 September until it reopened on 22 October 2018.
