Essex County Council are happy for applications for Special Events to be held within Essex and will be here to support and assist you to make your event successful, happy and safe for both event organisers and all other highway users.

What is a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) required for?

  • Road closures
  • One-way restrictions
  • Speed limits.
  • Prohibition of entry
  • Banned turns.
  • Weight restriction (environmental)

How do I apply for a TTRO for a Special Event.

How long does it take to process a TTRO for a Special Event

  • TTROs are made under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended and take a minimum of 10 weeks to process depending on the number of roads / public rights of way.
    • 1 – 5 roads / public rights of way to be included – 8 weeks minimum
    • 6 – 14 roads / public rights of way to be included – 10 weeks minimum
    • 15+ roads / public rights of way to be included – 12 weeks minimum
  • A consultation process is undertaken with the police, emergency, and other services
  • The public must be notified by advertisement in the local press

What information do you need to give us.

  • Completed application form
  • Plan to show the restrictions, with clear road names and north indicator
  • Any consents from other Counties/National Highways/sensitive locations
  • If TTRO is on any private road, you will need to send in consent from all of the residents

How much does it cost?

  • We will not normally charge for events organised by a charity (please provide registered Charity Number)
  • The cost is currently £ for a TTRO
  • The cost is currently £ for a TTRO for public rights of way (footpaths, bridleways or byways)
  • You will be invoiced for at a later date
