Safer, Greener, Healthier Walking

One of the ambitions of the Safer Greener Healthier campaign is to increase walking across the county, particularly for shorter journeys and as part of longer ones – such as walking to the station for example rather than driving.

So whether it’s a walk to the shops, to work or for pleasure, we want to encourage you to consider walking to help make Essex safer, greener and healthier.

The benefits of walking

  • Walking is free and one of the easiest ways for most people to stay active and healthy.
    • just 30 minutes of walking every day can increase heart and lung fitness, reducing the risk of chronic and cardio-vascular disease
    • it’s low impact so can strengthen joints and improve muscles without risking injury
    • it’s an opportunity to explore new places in your local area as well as catch up with friends and family
    • evidence suggests that being out in nature boosts mental health and wellbeing helping with depression and anxiety for example

See how we’re making walking one of our top priorities for our Safer Greener Healthier campaign.
