About the scheme

Preparations are being made to improve the pedestrian crossing facilities located on High Street, Epping. We will be replacing the current Pelican crossing located between numbers 242 and 250 on the High Street with a new Puffin crossing.

The works

Works are due to start on Monday 1 November 2021 and are expected to take approximately four weeks to complete.

Activities will include replacing or renewing underground cable ducts in the carriageway and footways as well as replacing above-ground equipment. The work will also include the widening of the crossing by 800mm overall (400mm each side) and the signal controller cabinet will be relocated. Extra low voltage equipment and lower-energy LED traffic signals will be installed in order to reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions and to enhance the safety of users.

What is involved and how it may affect you

The majority of the works will be carried out during the daytime between the hours of 9.30am and 3.30pm, Monday to Friday. Temporary traffic management will be required to support the works including lane restrictions managed by temporary traffic signals, to provide a safe working area while operatives are on site.

Access to properties/businesses within the works area will be maintained at all times.

We currently anticipate a number of overnight road closures on the High Street will be required during the first week to allow for work to take place across the carriageway. Closure dates will be advertised on site signage.

We plan to reopen the road following each shift. Advance warning notices will be used to advertise the works and appropriate diversions in place during temporary road closures.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
