Waterhouse Lane Bridge & road maintenance, Chelmsford

Works location and photo

Waterproofing works will help prevent future water seepage as seen on the underside of Waterhouse Lane Bridge

About the works

The Waterhouse Lane Bridge, situated on Waterhouse Lane/Rainsford Lane in Chelmsford, spans the River Can and carries the A1016.

In August 2024,  essential maintenance will occur to preserve the structure. Additionally, resurfacing work will take place on A1016 Rainsford Lane and Waterhouse Lane to enhance its condition.

The bridge will be waterproofed which involves removing the existing road surface, applying a spray waterproof membrane to the entire bridge deck, and reinstating the surface. These measures are crucial for the bridge’s long-term durability.

Temporary traffic management, including road closures, will be necessary to support these works, with arrangements adjusted according to activities taking place to minimise inconvenience to the public.

Where possible we will carry out additional maintenance activities to fully utilise closed routes to reduce the need for separate traffic management being necessary later.

How it will affect you

The current plan for traffic management is as follows:

Provisional dates (may be subject to change)

Works and proposed traffic management

Weekend closure: COMPLETED

Full weekend road closure at the bridge to support waterproofing works. No through traffic.

Please note that the drivers are required to drive with extra care when the bridge is reopened as the surface will be uneven until resurfaced.

24 Hour closure: 8am Saturday 17 August to 8am on 18 August. 24 hour closure of the bridge to support works to reinstate the bridge's expansion joints following the completion of the waterproofing works.

Overnight closures for surfacing:

Monday 12 August to 21 August 2024 (7pm to 5am nightly)

Road surfacing works will take place in phases overnight along A1016 Rainsford Lane and Waterhouse Lane.

This will extend from the A1060 Parkway junction on A1016 Rainsford Lane towards the junction where Waterhouse Lane meets Writtle Road. The site team will predominately working in a southerly direction along Rainsford Lane towards Waterhouse Lane.

During the road closures, a diversion will be in place as follows: Waterhouse Lane, A1060 Parkway, Van Diemans Road, Princes Road, London Road, Westway and vice versa.

Access to properties within the closure points will be supported by the site team although residents are advised that some delays may occur depending on activities being carried out and whether the materials have set.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

We urge all drivers to take additional care, observing road closures and diversions in place as no through traffic will be permitted.
