Major pavement repairs completed in Colchester City Centre
Colchester City Centre has been transformed following the completion of extensive repairs.
Repair work to improve pavements in Colchester City Centre is now complete.
Team Colchester carried out the work between autumn 2024 and March 2025. This is a partnership between Essex County Council, Colchester City Council and Essex Highways.
Residents, visitors and businesses in the city can now enjoy the new public spaces. The work focused on high-footfall areas including:
- Culver Street West
- Sir Issacs Walk
- High Street
- Trinity Street
It involved replacing and resetting damaged slabs, regrouting and sealing pavements. This will extend their lifespan and enhance safety and accessibility for residents.
In total, the team spent over 90 overnight shifts completing the work and:
- removed and replaced over 600 slabs
- used over 50 tonnes of concrete
- re-grouted 3,000 square metres of slabbed area
- re-sealed over 3,500 square metres
This has not only addressed immediate concerns, but is part of ongoing efforts to revitalise Colchester City Centre.
The work was funded by £300,000 reallocated from the Department for Transports HS2 budget. Colchester City Council also provided £50,000.
Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure, and Sustainable Transport at Essex County Council said: “Carrying out these essential repairs reflects our commitment to improving Colchester’s public spaces and making them more accessible.
“The improvements will not only enhance the city’s streetscape, but also make it easier for people to choose sustainable travel options. This means Colchester is a safer, greener, and healthier place for everyone.”
Councillor David King, Leader of Colchester City Council, said: “I’d like to thank partners at Essex Highways for completing these essential pavement repairs, marking an important milestone in our broader strategy to revitalise Colchester City Centre.
“Good paving is fundamental to creating safer, more accessible spaces for everyone. We will continue to improve our public spaces, ensuring Colchester remains a vibrant, welcoming place for shoppers, visitors, and residents alike. The successful completion of these repairs, with plans for more to be agreed, adds momentum to our ongoing transformation of Colchester City Centre.”
