Three million e-scooter rides since launch of Essex trial

E-scooters have replaced nearly 600,000 car trips as residents are asked to help shape the future of the trial.

Over three million journeys have taken place on e-scooters across Essex since the launch of the e-scooter trial four years ago.

The trial was approved by the Department for Transport in December 2020 and is currently run by Dott on behalf of Essex County Council in Basildon, Braintree, Chelmsford and Colchester.

There have since been 3,123,727 journeys using e-scooters, with an average travel distance of 2.07km.

E-scooter rides have replaced 593,508 car trips collectively covering 1,163,276km and displaced 109 tons of CO2.

The e-scooter trial is part of an ambition for Essex to become safer, greener and healthier with more sustainable forms of transport.

To mark three-million rides, the council wants to hear from Essex residents about their experiences of e-scooters and help shape the future of the trial.

Regular riders, occasional riders and people who are yet to use e-scooters are asked to complete a short survey. Questions include:

How familiar are you with e-scooter restrictions? E.g. no riding on pavements, must be 18+ years of age, etc.
What forms of transport would you use if not an e-scooter?
Why do or do you not use e-scooters?
