About the works

Footway improvements began in Colchester City Centre during autumn 2024, funded by Department of Transport HS2 budget and supplemented by Colchester City Council.

The work addresses vital repairs needed to improve key areas of the city, supporting safer, more accessible, and longer lasting footways.

Work is being carried out in phases and continue through to March 2025, including Culver Street West, Sir Isaac's Walk, Trinity Street, Trinity Square and High Street.

The repairs will involve slab resetting, replacement, regrouting, and sealing to ensure long-term durability.  This will address not only immediate issues, but will also contribute to the broader, ongoing efforts to revitalise Colchester’s city centre.

To minimise disruption, activities will be carried out overnight with temporary traffic restrictions in place to ensure public safety.

These footway repairs are separate to the ongoing City Centre Investment Programme being led by Colchester City Council. For more information on these schemes visit: Transforming Colchester City Centre - Colchester City Council.

How it will affect you

To minimise inconvenience, works will be carried out in phases, with temporary traffic restrictions varying according to activities taking place.  Some restrictions may remain during the day time where necessary, to keep pedestrians safe.

Work is scheduled to take from Sunday to Thursday between the hours of 7pm and 5am.  Noisiest works will take place during the early part of the shift, with less noisy activities taking place after 11pm.

Provisional dates (may be subject to change)
